Steel Stillman's
paintings explore the relationship between minimalism and
representation. His abstraction disregards the purity of high minimalism
in favor of the specificity of the real world. His work focuses on shape
as
a means to define space and recognize meaning. The show consists of work
from three ongoing series. The first is a group of small black and white
drawings abstracted from 19th Century American houses. In addition, two
modestly scaled paintings, also based on architectural motifs, use color
and the repetition of concentric shapes to create the illusion of space.
Finally, two irregularly shaped monochromes float as reliefs just off
the wall, engaging the gallery itself as the ground of the paintings.
