James Mills' site-specific installation uses such familiar objects as used dime store novels and Harlequin romance books to create an inverted library. Subtly altered and removed from their normal context these books become elements of a complex sculptural relief. Entitled "Community Library" these tightly stacked books are almost unrecognizable. Having lost their utilitarian purpose, they become elements of an abstraction. A beautiful brick wall, which the viewer must confront.

Without a label to identify his work, viewers may not realize Mills' participation or the identity of these once familiar objects. This discreet environment prompts the viewer to complete the staged scenario.
