Joey S. Kotting, Sunbathing with Sleeves Rolled Up, 1995, gum bichromate, bulls blood on canvas

An examination of work that combines performance and painting, broadening the definition of figuration through reference to incidents outside the viewer's immediate field of vision. These offscreen performances employ unusual mediums such as mother's milk, a Lakers game, sugar, blood, and iodine. The abstractions appear embedded with information, almost archeological in nature.
