Robin Graubard’s photographic work circles issues of identity and biography, fusing the politics of her subjects with her feelings of vulnerability and fascination with the violent and unfamiliar. Her subjects are people she met in the course of wandering through different countries and social realms -– some are chance encounters with strangers, some are people she has known. She lived in Prague for three years and traveled to different countries within the area including Russia and former Yugoslavia, providing her with a wealth of imagery.

Although the work has the impact of documentation, there is an underlying personal apprehension, a search for the familiar in the unfamiliar, and a personal draw to the dangerous situation. That danger can be found in the circumstances of desperate characters– of outlaws, soldiers, drug users and orphaned children.

Robin Graubard received a BFA from NYU film school in 1977. She was included in a recent exhibition at Participant, Inc., New York. She is exhibiting at White Columns, New York, concurrently with her exhibition at Momenta Art. Her photographs have been published in The New York Times, Paris Match, The Guardian, Time, Newsweek, Der Spiegel, Die Welt, Berliner Morgenstern, Ergo, Panorama, The European, Unicef, International Rescue Committee and others.
