Eric Schnell's elaborate mixed media installations are complex narratives centered around a recurring character based on Freud's case study Rat Man. Rat Man was a soldier overcome with guilt stemming from uncontrollable torture fantasies which he projected onto his closest relations. Schnell uses this character as a springboard to explore failed attempts at psychological transformation. His sculptural environments, both raw and fragile, contain a promise of passage or travel but are frozen in a purgatory-like landscape. His use of drawing and photography are like flowcharts for a thought process constantly attempting to correct itself.
