| Jody Culkin's sculptures made from knitted steel wool, fabric, and welded steel combine threat and humor to create a gothic world of repressed desire. With titles like Ethical Work, Moderation, and Let's Be Friends, these cartoonish yet meticulous objects possess a faux utilitarianism, accentuating their irony. In Shelf, several sewn sacks resembling brightly colored body parts, severed and decorated, are displayed like candy or children's toys. | ![]() |

She deliberately undermines her own sophisticated craftsmanship with quirky references to the domestic. The resultant objects appear to be tools of plots which continuously turn on themselves, creating a self-destructive comedy of errors. Following
this exhibition Culkin participated in numerous exhibitions including:
Urban Mythology, Bronx Museum of Art, NYC, Welded Sculptures, Neuberger
Museum, Purchase, NY, La Coscienza Luccicante, Comune di Roma Palazzo
delle Esposizioni, Rome, Italy, and The Model Home, PS1 Museum at the
Clocktower, NYC. |
